Drawing and Talking therapy is a non-directive, attachment-based intervention designed to help individuals process emotional pain or trauma through symbolic resolution. Its scientific foundation rests on neurobiological principles concerning how the brain stores and processes traumatic memories. Expressing worries in a symbolic form provides a safe distance from the trauma. This process empowers the individual, moving them from a passive role in their trauma to an active role in their recovery. Drawing and Talking is a targeted therapeutic program suitable for individuals of all ages, including children and adults. It functions as a proactive, time-sensitive support system designed to work alongside, rather than replace, intensive clinical mental health care. The process typically spans 12 weekly sessions of 30 minutes each, providing a safe, face to face, one-to-one environment for participants to navigate trauma and emotional distress. It can, however, also be delivered in a group setting for 45 minute sessions, this is often used in schools for children, and in care settings for older adults (including those living with dementia) or carers. It can also be delivered online if necessary.
By using art as a primary medium, it allows people to communicate complex feelings that are often difficult to put into words. Unlike many standard goal-oriented or cognitive therapies, this approach is non-directive, letting the individual lead their own emotional discovery.

The intervention was developed in the mid-1990s by paediatric neuropsychologist Daniel LeGoff, who observed that children with social communication difficulties showed spontaneous, positive interactions when motivated by a shared interest in LEGO®. Backed by psychological research, the Brick-by-Brick® programme is a cost-effective way to boost children's communication, social skills, fine motor skills and wellbeing. Known to kids as "Brick Club," it fosters achievement and lasting friendships through collaborative play.
This is a structured, face to face intervention, not just playtime, running for 8 to 12 weeks for 30 to 60 minutes, dependent on age. It is a child-led approach where activities are tailored to each individual’s strengths.
